About UNC-TV's FoundationBoard Members

UNC-TV Foundation Purpose
The foundation is organized and operated exclusively for charitable and educational activities that are for the sole benefit of the University of North Carolina Center for Public Television.  The foundation encourages, promotes, and supports UNC-TV through fund-raising, advocacy, and awareness activities consistent with the mission of UNC-TV.

A Brief History
The North Carolina Public Television Foundation was established on August 15, 1986 to promote and support the public service mission of UNC-TV, to raise funds to advance that effort, and to increase awareness of UNC-TV’s goals and activities. The foundation is an important administrative arm that enables UNC-TV to conduct business more efficiently.  In more recent years the foundation’s role has been expanded to include political advocacy on behalf of UNC-TV.  In 2005 in order to more clearly align its mission and identity with that of UNC-TV, the foundation began doing business as the UNC-TV Foundation

The founders and original directors of the foundation were William D. Carmichael, II of Chapel Hill, Don Curtis of Raleigh, Eli Evans of the Charles H. Revson Foundation in New York, James V. Johnson of Statesville, William Joslin of Raleigh, Henry Lewis of Chapel Hill, William D. Snider of Greensboro, and Valeria Lee of Winston-Salem.  Through the years there have been many distinguished members of the foundation board, including Jim Goodmon, Joseph Bryan, Jr., Waltye Rasulala, William R. Roberson, Jr., and Lindsey C. Warren, Jr., among others.

Major foundation benefactors through the years include Joseph M. Bryan, Sr., GlaxoSmithKline, Progress Energy, First Wachovia Corporation, the A.J. Fletcher Foundation, the Broyhill Foundation, the Cannon Foundation, and the Sara Lee Corporation.

Today, the UNC-TV Foundation stands poised to help UNC-TV reach its full potential for service in the era of digital television.  Working with UNC-TV in support of its Planned Giving Program and the Public Television Major Giving Initiative, the UNC-TV Foundation can be invaluable in finding new funding sources, creating greater financial stability and security for North Carolina’s statewide public television network and helping to bring life-changing television to future generations in the twenty-first century.
